COLUMBIA STATION — The Buckeye boys basketball team’s defense came to play early and its 3-point shooters found the range all night.
The result was a comfortable 51-39 win at Columbia on Friday in Patriot Athletic Conference cross-division action.
The Bucks (13-6, 10-4) held Columbia (8-10, 8-6) without a field goal for the first six minutes while roaring to a 13-1 lead. Although the Raiders got back in it in the second quarter and closed within four to start the second half, they never got closer.
Senior Spencer Imes helped secure Buckeye’s lead, burying two of his five 3-pointers early in the second half.
“We work a lot on zone in practice, getting the ball moving and getting open shots,” said Imes, who finished with 17 points. “Brock Brumfield and Anthony Watkins do a great job of driving and getting open looks for us.”
Buckeye finished with 14 assists on 20 field goals, led by six from Carter Hudak and three apiece from Brumfield and Watkins. The Bucks hit 10-of-21 3-pointers, with Imes drilling a pair early in the second quarter to get his night started.
“It helps a little to get a couple early, but you’ve always got to have confidence in the shot whether those go for you or not,” he said.
The defense held Columbia’s top scoring threat, 6-foot-6 senior center Josh Borling, to just three points in the first half on a banked 24-footer. Borling entered play averaging 16.8 points and came alive in the second half to finish with 16 points and six rebounds, but the Bucks made him work for it.
“We had three outstanding quarters of defense,” Buckeye coach Tom Harrington said. “We let up a little in the second quarter, but our defense in the second half was very strong.”
Senior Justin Canedy, who had the assignment on Borling much of the night, had four blocks to go with his 11 points. Buckeye won the rebounding battle 25-21.
“We had a good game plan and Justin did a great job battling on (Borling) all night,” Imes said.
Cameron Imes scored nine points and Jacob Doerge added seven as Buckeye cruised past Columbia 39-30 in the junior varsity game.
