NORTH CANTON — Just in case anyone thought the Wadsworth wrestling team had slipped, the Grizzlies threw down a statement Saturday at the North Canton Hoover Division I District.
Wadsworth repeated as champion and will send one more state qualifier (9) than last year after outlasting Massillon Perry.
“It’s very impressive,” 285-pound champion Jordan Earnest said. “We set our goal to get better this year, and we think we can do it. We think we have the team that can do it. We think we can take the title again. With two district championships in a row, we know we have the team, for sure.”
The Grizzlies will have strong lines to go with big numbers, as Luke Baughman (138) and Michael North (145) joined Earnest with titles.
Mikey Lewarchick (106), Logan Messer (132), Joey Baughman (182) and Clay McComas (220) finished as runners-up. Landon Hacker (120) and Dom Loparo (160) were third, meaning none of the nine qualifiers will run into a district champion the first round.
“From the end of the season to now, we always talk about getting that banner,” Grizzlies coach John Gramuglia said. “We have that (2010) state championship banner in our room. We talk about the guys and the tradition we have.
“We have all this fun, and I think that’s why they have the memories of it because as hard as we are as coaches, we have fun with them. What else is there in life? You have to have some fun.”
Life is good for the rest of Medina County, as 18 of its 24 state qualifiers came out of Hoover.
Logan Heil (120) and Matt Fields (132) won titles and Derek Fields (3rd, 126) also qualified for Brunswick.
Medina had a school-record five qualifiers in Ryan Wissel (2nd, 145), Brady Chrisman (3rd, 170), Braydon Potter (4th, 113), Jared Dressler (4th, 120) and Jonathan List (4th, 152). Highland will send Brady Linder (3rd, 152). Medina finished fourth, while Brunswick was fifth.
The party of five for the Bees was a welcome sight for Chrisman and Wissel, who were qualifiers last season.
“It’s awesome going down to Columbus with all my teammates this year,” Chrisman said. “In the past, it’s only been a couple of us. We can build off of each other’s momentum because we’re all out at states together.”
For Matt Fields, Saturday was just a subtle reminder that he’s still the lead dog.
A two-time state finalist and returning state champion, the North Carolina State pledge won his third straight district title.
“It’s a good feeling knowing people are coming for you,” he said. “Sometimes it makes people want to wrestle you harder. Sometimes it makes people want to shy away from you and not wrestle you to their full potential, which is a little on the annoying side.
“I guess it’s just a part of being on top. It does make the wins sweeter because each one is reassuring knowing that you’re still making jumps and improvements. It always feels good getting your hand raised.”
Wadsworth’s Cameron Riggenbach (152) will be an alternate.
