When business owners and residents heard about the Ohio Department of Transportation’s decision not to install guardrails along state Route 18, it was music to their ears.

Matt Snyder, owner of High & Low Winery off Route 18 in Sharon Township, said he’s pleased with the decision.

“We’re very happy about that,” he said. “They said they listened to the businesses’ concerns. We’re looking forward to partnering with them.”

ODOT had proposed guardrails along the corridor between Windfall and Medina Line roads. Route 18 is bordered by Granger and Sharon townships. The proposal was aimed at reducing accidents on that stretch of highway.

Business owners expressed concerns about trucks making deliveries from the east. If there were guardrails, trucks would have to turn around at one of the intersections and travel east to businesses on the Sharon Township side of Route 18.

ODOT officials informed those in attendance at the Medina County Economic Development Corp. meeting last week about the guardrail decision.

Bethany Dentler, executive director of the Medina County Economic Development Corp., said: “We’re pleased that ODOT listened to the business community and local officials who are likewise concerned with safety, but also wanted to ensure access for their employees and customers. We believe that this decision will help encourage continued business growth and development of the Route 18 corridor in accordance with the local plans that are already in place.”

Among those at the meeting were state Rep. Steve Hambley, R-Brunswick; state Sen. Larry Obhof, R-Montville Township; Granger Township Trustee Richard Pace; and Sharon Township Trustee Ray Lutz.

ODOT has said it is prevented by Ohio Revised Code to reduce the speed limit on Route 18. There are a few other things it can do to promote safety, including rumble strips and digital speed signs.

An ODOT spokeswoman said a media release on Route 18 safety issues would be released this week.
