GRANGER TWP. — The long-awaited construction of a roundabout on state Route 94 and Granger Road that was postponed last summer is scheduled to begin in the near future.
The $2.5 million project will close the intersection for 70 days, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation District 3 representative Crystal Neelon.
Neelon said a closure date has not been scheduled as of Thursday, but will definitely be after May 26 when Highland High School releases for summer break. She said the office will post a 14-day notice and set up road signs a week before the road will close.
“Hopefully, if we don’t run into too many issues, our plan is to have it open by the time school starts back up in August,” Neelon said, noting the 2017-18 school year starts Aug. 23 for Highland Schools.
The project is funded with federal and state highway safety funds. It will be contracted by Fechko Excavating Inc., of Medina.
It was delayed last summer due to “environmental permit delays and utility relocation” that would have delayed the completion of the project until spring of this year.
There will be detour signs set up for motorists to avoid the construction area.
According to ODOT documents, the construction of a roundabout will reduce the number and severity of crashes at the intersection.
From 2008 to 2011, there were 18 reported collisions at the intersection, 14 of these causing injuries.
More than half of the crashes involved an angle crash, often with a vehicle on Granger Road pulling out and being struck by a vehicle northbound on Ridge Road (state Route 94).
Other options, such as a four-way stop or a traffic signal, were not warranted based on traffic volumes at the intersection.
Neelon said the project was based on the 2008 to 2011 traffic study.
A roundabout directs traffic counterclockwise around a center island, traveling at a lower speed of 15 to 25 mph.
In 2015, a roundabout was constructed on the intersection of Columbia and Spieth roads in York Township.
