YORK TWP. — An 11-year-old golden retriever named Rex was rescued from a private pond on Lake Dawn Drive on Tuesday afternoon thanks to quick thinking by a neighbor.

“He must have went out there to probably chase a goose or duck or something that was hanging out,” owner Gerald Wodzisz said.

Wodzisz said he was driving home from work when he received word about Rex.

When arrived home, his neighbor Bill Devine was in the pond that he estimated to be at least 20 feet deep.

Rex “was still out in the pond. I don’t know how long he was out there,” Wodzisz said.

Devine and Wodzisz worked together to save the dog, with Devine tying a rope around Wodzisz as anchor before Devine made his way across the semi-frozen pond in a canoe.

“Bill was in the canoe. Bill is the one that grabbed him and pulled him out,” Wodzisz said.

The Medina County Sheriff’s Office also responded after receiving a call at about 4:30 p.m.

“We do want to thank the Medina Sheriff Department for coming and helping ... the officer was so very helpful,” Paula Wodzisz said later Tuesday in an email. “We also want to thank Bill Devine, our neighbor, for rescuing Rex and putting his own life at risk on the pond. Bill went out of his way to help Rex and we are so extremely grateful.

Tuesday night, Rex was recovering at home.
