Medina school facilities getting $1 million in upgrades this summer

MEDINA — More than $1 million worth of improvement projects are scheduled this summer at Medina schools.

“We look at the projects, based on sales tax money, and we set priorities as to what projects get moved forward,” District Business Director Jon Burkhart said at Tuesday’s school board work session.

He said he receives input from principals, teachers, staff, custodians and maintenance staff on items that need to be addressed.

“The one concern I am having, from talking to other business managers, is there is a ton of construction going on in Northeast Ohio right now,” Burkhart said. “Finding really good bids might be a challenge for us. I hope I’m wrong.”

He said contractors might pass on projects that aren’t potentially profitable.

“We’re trying to get bids out on the street for the paving, roofing and classroom expansions.”

The district will use $1.2 million in sales tax revenue to fund the projects.

Projects include:

  • Bus garage, West Smith Road, $564,000 — Burkhart said contractors will raise this lot slightly and put in a full storm drain down the middle of it.
“They need to find a way to drain this property,” he said. “It’s a challenge because it’s super flat. Water runs through the parking lot. The problem is that water freezes. We have 30 some bus drivers walking across it. We have to figure out a way to make this better.”
  • Roofing, 777 E. Union St., $444,870 — Burkhart said the project will cover 14,000 square feet of roofing roughly above the middle auditorium at the high school.
“This is a complete removal of all the roofing materials, all the way down to the steel deck,” he said. “They would inspect the steel deck and see if there’s any corrosion.
“If we don’t address it now, it’s going to get worse. Then, the costs will sky rocket.”
  • A.I. Root Middle School, 333 W. Sturbridge Drive, $150,000 — Work will be done on the interior of the school. Lockers will be replaced and some walls will be constructed.
  • Paving the tennis courts across East Union Street, $149,500 — This is a carryover project from last year. The surface of the courts will be removed. A drain will be installed near the center of the courts, where the nets are.
  • Claggett Middle School, 420 E. Union St., $45,000 — Burkhart said contractors will update and modernize the cafeteria.
“We want to make it enticing for kids to go through the lunch line,” he said.
  • Garfield Elementary School, 234 S. Broadway St., $30,000 — This project will be done in conjunction with Claggett.
“We’re going to build a better serving line and cash register,” Burkhart said. “We’re going to tie those together with Claggett.”
  • Medina Memorial Stadium, 420 N. Jefferson St., $35,000 — The concrete structure under the aluminum seats is cracked and needs maintenance, Burkhart said, adding it will be recoated with a water-tight system.” He said it’s important to preserve it because it’s used for storage.

Burkhart said there also will be several smaller projects, such as parking lot repairs at the high school and Medina Community Recreation Center, 855 Weymouth Road.

Any repairs at the rec center fall under the shared capital plan with the city. Burkhart said it’s a 50/50 split.

“It doesn’t come out of the sales tax money,” he said. “We put in $100,000 a year into that fund for shared improvements.”

The house lighting system at the Performing Arts Center also is scheduled to be replaced, Burkhart said.
