BRUNSWICK HILLS TWP. — A local family was displaced from their Caxton Lane home after an early morning fire Saturday quickly engulfed their residence, the township fire chief said.

“They had smelled something burning, heard something. They described it as unusual noises and then they discovered there was a fire in the garage,” Fire Chief Anthony Strazzo said.

Robert Skoczen Jr., wife Jennifer and their daughter were outside when firefighters arrived shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday. The two-story home at 922 Caxton Lane was fully involved, with a significant amount of fire coming out of both the front and the rear of the residence, a fire department news release said.

“There were no injuries either to the residents of the home or to the firefighters,” Strazzo said.

After determining the residents were safe, firefighters fought the fire for nearly an hour, preventing it from spreading to nearby homes. The fire was under control by 1:57 a.m., the release said.

A donation drop-off for the family has been set up at the Brunswick Hills Police Department, 505 Substation Road.

“Currently, they have enough clothing and personal effects,” Strazzo said Sunday. “Gift cards would be appreciated, whether they are food gift cards or to department stores and things like that, those would be welcome.”

While the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, it is under investigation by the Medina County Fire Investigation Task Force, Strazzo said.

“They have taken a look and they will issue a report regarding a cause of the fire,” he said. “We are waiting on that report.”

According to Medina County Auditor’s Office records, the property is valued at $218,360.

Crews from Brunswick, Hinckley Township, Strongsville, Valley City, Columbia Township and Medina also responded to the call. The American Red Cross responded to assist the residents.
