Richard Keith Grondin, 94, passed away at his home surrounded by loved ones Monday, September 4, 2017. Richard was born in Otisville, Michigan on February 8, 1923 to the late Daniel and Eva (Bondy) Grondin.
Richard was a WWII Veteran, serving in all five European Campaigns as a "Tough Ombre" in the 90th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. Never proud or boasting of the honors he was given, he was the recipient of the Purple Heart and five Bronze Stars.
Richard graduated from the University of Michigan in 1949 receiving a degree in Industrial Psychology. He also attended the graduate school for Business Administration. But his proudest achievement from "that great school up North" is gaining the heart of his true one and only, Betty. They married in 1950.
Richard had numerous jobs. He was a logger in Washington, a ranch hand in North Dakota and worked a Hot Strip Mill for Ford Motor Co. He started his career with Silkworth Oil Co. in 1952. When Silkworth was sold to Gulf Oil Corp. in 1955, "they sold him along with everything else" and he worked there until 1982. While working for Gulf Oil he was transferred approximately every four years until he settled in Medina in 1970.
He loved being with family and friends. He enjoyed cards, entertaining, writing books, telling stories, reciting epic poems and ballads, singing songs and most of all - laughter. He was kind, gentle and compassionate. His dedication to family and friends will be greatly missed. Whether he was tending to his property, his pond or his loved ones, he did it with a gentle touch, respect for all and abounding love in his heart. Richard died as he lived, in faith, courage and strength.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth J. (Kratzmiller) Grondin; children, David (Patty) of Camp Verde, Arizona, Beth (Tom) Haskins of Barberton, Phil (Cindy) of San Diego, California, Joe (Laura) of Medina, Eve (Julian) Janota of Kelleys Island and Mary Bowman of Lodi; 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; numerous nephews and so many loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Grondin; grandson, Jared Grondin; sister, Nelly Grondin and his brothers, Art, Paul, Kenneth, Sterling, Adam "Lyle", Oliver and Ivan "Pete" Grondin.
