SULLIVAN TWP. — McKenzie Hendershot casually hit a walk-off double then nonchalantly moseyed to the dugout.

The tamest game-winning hit in the history of Black River softball was brought to you by Mom and Dad, who wouldn’t have their daughter act any other way.

The junior first baseman gave the sixth-seeded Pirates their first tournament win since the 2012 regional semifinals Thursday, beating scrappy No. 11 seed Orrville 6-5 in a Norwayne Division III Sectional semifinal.

Black River (18-7) advanced to play today at third-seeded Fairless.

“My dad (former Pirates baseball coach Dozier Hendershot) always tells me, ‘Act like you’ve done it before,”’ Hendershot said with a smile.

Hendershot dug in against Nikki Martin with one out in the seventh, and Kayla Gardner and Hannah Barco were on base after a fielder’s choice and four-pitch walk.

Working the count full — she never faced a pitcher’s count in four plate appearances — Hendershot crushed a ball to right-center. Center fielder Shadra Hamsher’s desperation dive wasn’t all that close, and Gardner scored easily.

The walk-off saved the Pirates after the Red Riders (6-17) had tied the game with three runs in the sixth.

“I knew I had to get the ball in play because I knew (Gardner) would score with just a base hit,” Hendershot said. “So with two strikes I was thinking just get the ball in play and just try to get it to the right side.”

Black River had other offensive stars. Leadoff hitter Grace Spencer had three hits, Emily Zumack had two singles and two runs and Barco drove in the first two runs with a two-out single in the first.

A lead was built methodically, as the Pirates moved to 4-1 in the third on a Zumack single, stolen base and two wild pitches and a Barco hit by pitch and third wild pitch from Martin that scored pinch-runner Emily Reynolds.

Coached by former Dalton High and Kent State star Jessica (Carmichael) Bolinger, Orrville scratched to 4-2 in the fourth, but Black River immediately responded on a Kaina Schmoll sacrifice fly.

Things then got hairy in a hurry, as starter Bailey Scheck gave up three singles in the sixth. Barco (9-7) entered in relief but surrendered a two-run double to McKinley Smith that tied the game at 5.

The defense finally righted the ship in the seventh. A wild pitch hopped off the fence back to catcher Gardner, and a runner trying for third was gunned down when Scheck smartly blocked the bag. Barco later got a looking strikeout to strand another runner on second.

When the momentum flipped, the Pirates didn’t panic.

“Confidence in each other, it helped a lot,” Barco said. “We’ve gotten better at that — overall confidence and teamwork.”
